Homeless Man Caught Sleeping Outside Animal Shelter Melts Worker With Explanation.
Last week, a kennel technician at the DeKalb County Animal Services in Chamblee, Georgia, found a homeless man sleeping near the facility’s front door.
The man and his dog, Tata, had been separated, and the man had spent his last dime on bus fare to get to the shelter, hoping someone had turned her in.
Tata had been turned in, it turns out, about two weeks earlier. But she was being housed at the shelter’s newest facility, which had just opened in late July at the other end of town. The kind-hearted kennel tech who found the man sleeping in the doorway that morning verified the information and, out of the kindness of his heart, even paid the man’s way to get to the new facility.
According to the organization Pets of the Homeless, 3.5 million Americans are homeless and of those, between 5 and 10 percent have pets – although, in some areas, that figure rises to an astonishing 24%.
Why would someone who’s homeless take on that added responsibility? For the same reasons anyone takes on the responsibility of pet ownership – protection, companionship, unconditional love and– for the millions of people who suffer from depression– maybe even a reason for getting up in the morning.
From the Pets of the Homeless site: “Pets provide a deep comfort. Pets are non-judgmental. They are loyal. They provide warmth and security. The homeless get a type of normalcy by providing food and water for their pets. In some cases, they provide them with reality.”
“Some homeless would sacrifice their own food for their pets. Then there is the protection factor. Living on the streets is dangerous especially for women and the disabled.”
“For many on the streets, these animals provide them with security from other homeless or from those that discriminate against the homeless with beatings or from others who may steal their modest possessions.”
Whatever his reasoning, this man in particular clearly loves his dog and is overjoyed to be reunited!
