In 1977, David Bowie and Bing Crosby made history with this classic Christmas carol duet

Christmas certainly is the most wonderful time of the year.

For many, the celebration is the perfect way to end another busy year.

The slowness and warmth of the holidays are incredibly grounding.

And even if it’s not your thing, it’s hard to excuse yourself from feeling some sort of Christmas cheer.

One wonderful way to celebrate is by singing beloved Christmas carols.

With there being so many, it’s not hard to find one or two that you can chime in on.

And people aren’t the only ones singing their hearts out, celebrities and musicians have long-covered Christmas songs to get everyone in the spirit.

Just check out this incredibly classic duet by David Bowie and Bing Crosby.

In our video today, the star-studded pair gathers together to perform this sincere winter treat.

Together, they perform “The Little Drummer Boy (Peace On Earth)“.

There’s something undeniably charming and dreamy about this classic recording.

Whether it’s the timelessness of the song, the music artists themselves, or just Christmas in general – this video is sure to give you a delight.

These two legends join together, representing two different musical genres, and provide the best holiday carol.

This video is part of Crosby’s 1977 holiday special “Bing Crosby’s Merrie Olde Christmas”.

The television special starred Bing Crosby with a cast of special guests.

The entire narrative revolves around family and Christmas time.

A long-lost relative, Sir Percival Crosby, invites the family out to England for the holidays.

The special includes this unusual duet between Bowie and Crosby.

Unfortunately, it was Crosby’s final Christmas special, recorded just five weeks before his death, and he was unable to view the final release. This makes the duet that much more special.

The special introduces the duo as a young David Bowie knocks on Crosby’s door.

He visits him while he’s in England. The exchange that follows is light-hearted and memorable.

Bowie- “Hello, are you the new butler?” Bing- “It’s been a long time since I’ve been the new anything.” Bowie- “Are you related to Sir Percival? Bing- “Well distantly.” Bowie- “Oh you’re not the poor relation from America?” Bing- “Gee news sure travels fast doesn’t it? I’m Bing.”

While Bowie gets a little cheeky with Crosby, he remains a gentleman and accepts him with a smile.

Bowie- “You’re the one who sings, right?” Bing- “Well, right or wrong, I sing either way.”

This type of banter doesn’t really occur anymore these days, and they do an excellent job of keeping things light.

The chat eventually turns to the subject of Christmas, and Bowie mentions to Crosby how his young son adores the holiday.

The two no sooner launch into this ever-memorable and cozy duet.

Once they start singing, their voices fill the air with warmth. The fact that both musicians were from opposite ends of the industry makes their unity that much more powerful.

To date, the YouTube video of the clip has close to six million views and fifty-four thousand likes!

The video of their duet has become such a classic that others have gone on to try their hand at reproducing it (Will Ferrel and Jon C. Reilly, we’re looking at you!).

As Crosby croons, Bowie compliments his voice with impromptu ad-libs sure to get you in the mood.
