Neglected 130lb dog walks into his first ever home

Cosmo is a lovable Saint Bernard who did not have an easy life.

This huge pup was born to a breeder in Nebraska. No one knows why the breeder decided to surrender Cosmo to the Hearts United for Animals shelter.

The poor pup was confused as to why he was in the shelter, but despite that, Cosmo was still very friendly with the shelter staff.

The shelter shared Cosmo’s profile on a pet adoption site, and a woman named Jayne and her husband happened to come across it.

They fell in love with the sweet dog and decided they wanted to adopt him.

Jayne and her husband live in upstate New York. Which meant Jayne had to fly to Nebraska, then rent a car so she could drive Cosmo home with her.

She was willing to go through all those miles to bring Cosmo into her home. She really loved the big pup!

Over a thousand miles later and here she was nervously waiting to meet the adorable St. Bernard. She and Cosmo bonded instantly!

“I don’t know if Cosmo has any understanding of what’s happening, but I think he understands there’s a human here who wants to give him some love and he’s pretty happy about it,” Jayne said.

Jayne and Cosmo began their drive back to Upstate New York the next morning.

Everyone at the shelter was sad to say goodbye to Cosmo, but they were happy he was going to a good home.

Cosmo was nervous about getting in the car but once he figured out how to climb in, he began to realx.

It was a long drive from Nebraska to New York but Cosmo was perfectly fine in the back.

Finally, Cosmo and Jayne arrived at Jayne’s house. The big pup finally took his first steps in his new home.

Jayne proceeded to introduce Cosmo to her two other dogs, Poppy and Grendel. And they got along just fine!

Jayne allowed Cosmo to explore his new house at his own pace. The pup slowly wandered around the living room, sniffing all the armchairs then stopped to say hello to Jayne’s giant rabbit!

“It’s nice to see him on a big space, see him spread out and put his belly on a cool floor, and just know he’s finally staying in a space, a place where can feel happy and comfortable,” Jayne said.

Cosmo also met Jayne’s kids, Alice and Owen. The dog’s eyes lit up when he saw the kids coming to pet him. He knew they would be the best of friends!

Weeks went by and Cosmo soon got comfortable in his new home.

The couch is his favorite place to take a nap, and he loves sampling his family’s ‘people food.’ He and his sister Poppy also became best friends!

Cosmo has now been with Jayne and her family for a few months, and he’s doing really well.

The lovable Saint Bernard is surrounded by people and animals who love him, and that love has helped him come out of his shell.

“Animals just understand life a little bit better than people sometimes. It’s like they know what’s important, and if they have love and food and a roof over their heads…that’s all that really matters,” Jayne said.
