Almost anyone who is related to or friends with a nurse knows that they are some of the hardest working, most amazing people in the world. But sadly, some don’t appreciate this.
Imagine doing shifts that often exceed 12 hours a day.
During those shifts, you have to manage hundreds of people, ensuring that they’re all getting the help they need to survive. Nurses don’t have to imagine this, because that is their reality.
Most people do not appreciate how much nurses contribute to our wellbeing.
Jessica Urtz is one of those incredibly hard-working nurses.
She lives in Rome, New York. She specializes in stroke victims. The effect of a stroke on a person is often devastating, and the recovery process long and drawn out.
It’s incredibly stressful to help these people. It’s often a thankless task, and yet Jessica does it day in day out. She must have helped thousands of victims of strokes get better and back to living full lives.
But one day, something happened at home that had a huge impact on Jessica Urtz’s working life.
Jessica has a husband called Phillip. He has his own job, and while he works hard, he can’t begin to imagine the pressure that his wife is under.
On the day in question, Jessica came home after a 14-hour shift. Phillip had been home for hours by then. He’d already eaten dinner.
So Jessica made herself a sandwich and went off to bed. She had another big shift the next day and desperately needed some rest!
But after Jessica had gone into the bedroom, Phillip decided to do something that would shock her.
Jessica had no idea of anything until she checked her Facebook page the next day.
Phillip had written something about Jessica. And it made her cry.The post said this:
“This is my wife Jessica having dinner after a 14 hour day. She comes home from work, has enough time to eat and get ready for bed and it’s back to work the next day for another shift.”
So far, it was an accurate description. Jessica could not understand where this post was going.
“She is up early to get ready for her day. She doesn’t like to be bothered in the morning and I respect that. She showers, throws her hair up, grabs her lunch, gives the dog and me a kiss and heads out the door.”
Was Phillip criticizing Jessica for not giving him enough attention? Had she done something selfish without realizing?
“At work she takes care of people who are having the worst days of their lives. Strokes, car accidents, motorcycle accidents, falls, breaks, brain damage and more. She takes care of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends and families. It doesn’t matter who you are or what happened. She will take care of you.”
Now Jessica started to realize. She hadn’t done anything wrong. In fact, her husband loved her so much and wanted to talk about what a good person she is.
“She works through lunch and rarely has time to sit. She comes home after 14 hours, takes off her shoes that have walked through blood and tears, and just wants to sit down. I don’t ask her about her day because she doesn’t like to talk about work when she is home and that’s fine.”
By now, Jessica had started crying.
“If she does want to talk, I will listen. Sometimes she comes home happy and sometimes she comes home sad. But no matter how she feels, she is always on time for her next shift.”
Jessica was thinking about it, and he was right.
She had always been on time to work. She didn’t think that that was anything to broadcast. But then plenty of people would struggle to be on time after a 14 hour day. Not Jessica.
“I love her with all my heart. My wife is my hero. My wife is a Stroke Nurse.”
Jessica realized why she had married Phillip. It was because he could make her feel like the most important person in the world, and he was always appreciative of her, even though her career took up a lot of time.
If only all husbands could be as thoughtful as Phillip!
