A special bond
Despite Beanie’s challenging background and the obstacles she faced, Elrod was determined to show her new furry friend what love and care truly meant.
Over time, a special bond formed between the two, as Elrod became like a second mom to Beanie.
And it worked. Slowly but surely, Beanie started to respond to Elrod’s touch and dance. They would dance to all kinds of music, but it was clear that the two loved slow dancing together the most.
Now, Beanie and Elrod slow dance together every day. It’s a beautiful moment of connection between the two, and something that Elrod cherishes deeply.
“It’s a mommy daughter thing,” Elrod said. “Beanie brings joy to our family. I’m just happy we can give her the life she deserves.”
Julie Elrod’s commitment to her adopted senior dog, Beanie, has paid off tremendously. Despite being blind and deaf, Beanie now receives daily "slow dance therapy" from Elrod, who holds her close and sways back and forth while singing to her.
Though Beanie may not be able to hear the music, the physical touch and presence of her mom have clearly made a positive impact. After a few years in her new home and with plenty of love training, Beanie is like a brand new dog.
But despite the challenges, Elrod never gave up on Beanie. She continued to show her love and patience every day, and slowly but surely, Beanie began to open up.
“She has come a long way in two years. She is now happy, content, housebroken, and loves to eat,” Elrod said. “And most importantly, she loves to be loved. She’s my shadow and my constant companion. I cannot imagine life without her.”
Elrod’s slow dance therapy has not only helped Beanie come out of her shell, but it has also brought the two of them even closer together. It’s a beautiful example of the power of love and connection, and the lengths that one person will go to for the sake of their furry friend.
Elrod’s dedication to Beanie’s well-being has paid off in more ways than one. Beanie has not only learned to trust and love again, but she’s also become a loyal companion to Elrod.
"She’s in my arms pretty much 24 hours a day. Wherever I go, she goes," said Elrod. "And she shows me how much she loves me in different ways. It’s like we’re each other’s soulmates."

Elrod says that taking care of special needs dogs, like Beanie, has changed her life for the better.
“I am so grateful for these special needs dogs, who teach me to be patient, kind, and selfless,” Elrod said. “It’s an honor to be their mom and to show them love and compassion.”
In addition to Beanie, Elrod and her husband run a sanctuary for other special needs pups. They are dedicated to providing these dogs with the care and attention they need to live happy and fulfilling lives.
