Family Of Nine Live Off Grid In 500-Square-Foot Home Because They ‘Reject Society’

Kip Smyth has built the life he imagined for himself and his family, and though it may seem unorthodox to some, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Kip grew up in Thousand Oaks, California.

He was a city boy who liked to party.

As he got older, he took a job as a manager at a retail store and quickly came to realize the "consumer culture" and fast-paced lifestyle was not for him.

He and his wife, Carrie, were both in agreement: They wanted to find a new and more sustainable place to live and raise their kids.

About seven years ago, the Smyths purchased 20 acres of land on the Ozarks.

According to Truly, the family of nine — Kip, Carrie, and their seven children — now live totally "off the grid" so as to be removed from the public school system and Western medicine.

They all reside in a 500-square-foot tiny home where the kids are homeschooled and the family works together to raise farm animals and harvest their own food.

"I’m pulling my children out of the negative things of the world," Kip told Truly. "If you look at what’s happening in America right now, the kind of craziness, it’s not getting a better society."

Meet this big family and see how they live their day-to-day lives in the video.
