Son assists sick mom with ALS to dance floor then lifts her up for touching dance no one will forget
A wedding is an extremely important event in not only the lives of the people getting married but their family and friends as well.
And that goes double for parents of the bride and groom.
Unfortunately, we sometimes have to enjoy these celebrations without our parents.
Thankfully, Terri Hightower of Clarksville, Tennessee was able to attend her son’s wedding, despite the fact that her ALS diagnosis left her health in decline.
Terri had been diagnosed with the degenerative disease, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in December 2019.
By the summer of 2020, she was no longer able to walk. But that didn’t stop her from attending her son Scooter’s wedding on Oct. 9.
Since Scooter was so grateful that his mother was able to attend his wedding, he wanted to make sure it was an extra special day.
So, he and his wife Afton planned a special mother and son dance for the wedding festivities.
“I was wanting to do something really special for her because one of the things is when she was diagnosed with ALS, she was waiting for two things in her life to happen, before she wanted to go to the other side so to speak,” Scooter told FOX 17.
“She was waiting for her granddaughter to be born, my niece, and she is going on six months now, seven months, and then she was waiting for our wedding. She wanted to be at our wedding.”
The video of this mother-son dance ended up going viral with more than 10 million people watching the emotional moment.
The video shows guests standing around the dance floor and then Scooter wheeling his gorgeously dressed mother out onto the dance floor in her wheelchair.
Scooter’s dad then walks over and helps to lift mom out of her chair and into Scooter’s arms.
Scooter leans his mother against him as he hunches over so he can put his head on her shoulder as they dance to Mothers by Thomas Finchum.
The two sway back and forth as they both gently weep.
There wasn’t a dry eye in that venue.
At the end of the dance, Scooter gently sits his mother back into her chair.
Everyone in the venue broke out into applause as a few family members walk onto the dance floor to surround mom and her son and enjoy a close embrace.
It is a particularly heartwrenching moment.
Afton could be seen in the video shedding tears over this emotional moment on the side of the dance floor.
Terri passed away 10 days after the wedding surrounded by family and friends.
The family wanted to raise awareness for ALS and asked their videographer, Neil Fox, to share the video on his Facebook page where it went viral.
“It is so amazing how many – hundreds, thousands even – have reached out to us showing their love and sympathy. Terri felt every emotion possible. It was a very bittersweet moment, knowing that was her goal and knowing how much it meant to her and Scooter. We hope this video can bring more awareness to ALS.”
