Sweet-natured service dog figured out how to feed her best friend who can’t use her limbs
Like most of us with a taste for creating, Bracha Fischel loves to make things.
Fischel is a painting artist, and the feel of a brush and canvas is what makes up a great part of her life.
Though in 2006, the worst happened. Fischel came down with rheumatoid arthritis.
The resulting surgery rendered her unable to use all four of her limbs – effectively a death sentence for someone who loves to paint.
I can’t imagine being in Fischel’s shoes, and being a quadriplegic is something I wouldn’t wish even on my worst enemy.
Nonetheless, there was nothing she could do about it. Of course she didn’t deserve it, but it’s not like someone consciously rendered her a quadriplegic.
She had to adjust, and that’s a really tall order for someone who can’t use their limbs.
Bracha made some progress, eventually learning to paint with her mouth. Now that’s impressive, no matter how you look at it!
But who says she had to fight his battle alone? When someone’s rendered this disadvantaged, it’s only fair they get the helping hand they need. In Fischel’s case, it was a helping paw.
Fischel was given a service dog, and we all know dogs excel in the “helping” category.
Her dog is an adorable Black Labrador named Donna, and she’s about as sweet as we’ve come to know Labradors to be.
Donna goes above and beyond to help Bracha.
Showing off how smart Labradors can be, Donna has learned how to carefully handle a spoon of food in her mouth to feed Bracha.
She picks up and hands over things to Bracha if need be, opens doors for her, and everything else that a dog can do for someone.
It was as if Bracha received her own guardian angel, just one that walked on all fours and was covered in fur.
“Donna brings brushes into my mouth, as well as pencils, felt-tip pens.” – Bracha tells in an interview with The Dodo.
And seeing how dogs do everything with their mouths, I bet Donna loves every bit of it. Helping Donna out probably doesn’t feel any different from interacting with other dogs.
While we’re used to the concept of people taking care of dogs, Donna seems to be the one taking care of her human here!
Fischel has an Instagram account, where she lets the rest of the world see how Donna helps her out.
Truly, this doggo deserves an award for what a helpful sweetie she is. I hope she gets all the treats and pets she could ask for because she’s certainly earned them.
Thanks to Donna, Fischel can live happily in spite of her condition and do what she loves. The Lab couldn’t be happier to help either, which is no surprise for the breed.
Donna shows how far the helpful, loving, gentle nature of the Retrievers can go.
